Day 1—The City of Scilla

Reggio Calabria, Italy Today I arrived in the coastal city of Scilla in Southern Italy. The small coastal towns in Calabria are considered to be the most beautiful in the world...and I can’t argue with that!

Upon reaching Scilla, I was stunned by the splendid crystal blue Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, the rocky coasts that alternate with sandy beaches and the scents of natural untouched forests. There are the strong and genuine flavors of local food, genuine hospitality and the vestiges of this regions ancient origins. But with all the beauty and splendor to behold, I am on a quest.

Day 2—Beach of the Sirens (Mermaid’s beach)

In Scilla, Reggio Calabria, Italy Decided to take a stroll around the town and down to the beautiful Beach of the Sirens in the shadow (figuratively not literally) of th 11th century, Castello Ruffo. Throughout Calabria the small mountain towns offer stunning panoramic views of the turquoise-blue sea. The buildings bear the heavily influenced architecture of the Greeks and are emboldened with vibrant pastel color of all shades. The towns and villages cascade down the rocky coast and halt at the edge of the sea. Mermaid’s Beach is wonderful! Its coarse sand, are lapped by the beautiful crystalline and clear water of the Tyrrhenian Sea. I think I’ll wade in and continue my search later…

Day 3—Scilla, Reggio Calabria, Italy

A person can not live on a quest alone without some amazing Southern Italian cuisine…and there is plenty of that in Scilla! While walking about the town I discovered homemade Lagane pasta, sobrasada (a meat spread) and the famous Calabria Red peppers! These peppers are dark red in color and are aged on the vine to ensure a more potent heat and fruitier taste.

Calabria is known for its spicy and robust cuisine, emphasizing rich ingredients like garlic, and sun-dried tomatoes. Pastas and breads, fish from the ocean and lakes, nuts, mushrooms, and game from the forests make for numerous dishes. And while farmland is sparse, they are still able to cultivate a large variety of crops including—the reason I’m here—the arancia calabrese, also known as bergamot, an orange grown only in Calabria. I’ll look more into this…right after my meal.

Day 4— Gelateria Nonna Rosa - Tropea, Calabria, Italy

Another discovery today—Bergamot Gelato is king in Calabria! Stopped in a cafe for some fresh Italian gelato. While gelato in Calabria is superb anywhere you go, the Calabria Bergamot gelato is perfection. It’s tart, orange citrus makes for the perfect combination in a creamy cold treat. Bergamot is only grown in the Calabria region of Italy. It is renowned across the globe– And the very reason I’m here.

Day 5— Tropea, Calabria, Italy

Bergamot continues to make its presence know! The di Bergamotto is a staple drink in Italy. Based on an original recipe for the 1850s know as the “Aperitiva Di Corte” or “The Drink of Kings”! This is the Calabria version of Rosilio, an ancient style Italian liqueur.

Recipes are typically crafted with herbs and spices such as cinnamon, clove, coriander, vanilla, cardamom, coffee, sage, bay leaf, basil, and mint, to name just a few. But what makes this rosilio so special is the bergamot, grown only in Calabria. It’s just anther reason I’m here for the bergamot for our exclusive new fragrance.

Day 6— Tropea, Reggio Calabria

I can’t believe the beauty of the Reggio Province in Calabria. But the beauty I’ve been searching for this entire time is finally in hand. I came here for the Bergamot! Over 80 percent of the world’s production of bergamot comes from this tiny area alone. It is sought after for it’s delightful oils, perfumes and, as is my specialty, fragrances.

Bergamot is citrusy, tart, and elegant. It hints of light notes with mild spicy tone, complex with nuances of fruit. This will be the perfect addition to my exclusive fragrance with world renowned Master Perfumer Christophe Laudamiel!
