“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” That quote, by the Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu, is over two thousand years old… But it couldn’t describe this journey any better.

The first step, for me, began decades ago. It started before I even knew it was happening. Was it the moment my mother wrapped me in a warm towel, fresh from scented bath waters? Was it waking up to my Grandma baking sweet cinnamon rolls? Or could it have been the gentle breeze on the hot summer days, blossoms and freshly mowed grass, ripe sweet fruits and vanilla ice cream? Something in one of those wondrous memories was that “first step” long before I even knew my journey had begun.

Life found me traveling the globe. Exotic markets in the Orient introduced me to spices, aromas, and delicacies I had never experienced. Trekking deep into the Rain Forest of South America challenged my every step, but stunned me with the diversity of life from flowers, to roots, to intoxicating herbs. Tropical destinations of the bluest skies blended seamlessly into the sea, presented me with a variety of fruits. Even the mysterious waters of the Dead Sea in the Middle East offered something new and wonderful. But still my journey continued…I realized each of these smaller journeys had crafted a much larger one. One whose path I find myself on now.

It was years later, walking in New York’s Central Park, when it finally become clear. A quiet evening stroll took me past a man selling ice cream. The mix sweet vanilla, chocolate, caramel and cinnamon played with the floral and green of the park…and for the sweetest of moments, I was back in that summer day on my porch. My journeys and experiences had lead to this moment, and I finally realized their purpose!
